John Williams Gunnison, army topographical engineer in charge of surveying a route to the West for the Pacific Railroad, was born in New Hampshire and graduated from West Point in 1835. Richard H. Kern was the older brother of Edward Meyer Kern. Richard was also an illustrator and scientist who, like Edward, accompanied the surveyor John C. FreĢmont on an expedition through the Rocky Mountains. He later worked for the U.S. Army, drawing topographical views of Indian territories. Unfortunately, he was killed in an ambush in 1853. James Hervey Simpson was a West Point cadet who served with the Topographical Corps to explore and survey the Green Bay, Wis., area.
